CUSTOM MOUTHGUARDS GOLD COAST & BRISBANE

Custom Mouthguards

Protect your beautiful smile with a custom-made mouthguard from Complete Dental in Coorparoo & Elanora.

One of the more important branches of dentistry is actually preventive dentistry! We want to stop the damage to your teeth before it even happens. That is, before you even need to come to the dentist!

One way we can do this is by creating custom mouthguards, to protect your teeth from force, trauma or grinding. Most commonly, custom mouthguards are popular with patients who play contact sport. However, they can also be used at night by patients who may wear down their teeth as they sleep.

Benefits of a custom mouthguard from Complete Dental in Coorparoo & Elanora:

Protection:
Your teeth are with you for life and are a vital part of your everyday function and expression. It only makes sense that you would want to protect them in the most effective way that you could, especially if you grind your teeth, or you play sport. Mouthguards act as a buffer between your upper and lower teeth, as well as absorbing shock from significant impacts to your teeth, jaw and skull. A sports injury, like a broken arm is usually a simple fix. A broken tooth is not.

Cost:
It is no secret that significant dental trauma can be expensive and lengthy. According to the Australian Dental Association, approximately one-third of traumatic injuries to the teeth are sports related. A dentist-made, custom-fit mouthguard can reduce the risk of significant impacts to the teeth and jaw. In turn, it may help to prevent fractures, the loss of teeth, damage to the gums, lips and jaw and even concussions, saving you the cost of their subsequent medical bills.

How is a custom mouth guard made?

The first part of any dental procedure or treatment, is a thorough examination of the mouth to check for any dental problems that may affect the shape or effectiveness of the mouth guard. Patients with braces are usually able to have a custom mouthguard made and extra care will be made to ensure that it fits comfortably around the wires.

The dentist will take impressions of your mouth, to clearly see the shape of your teeth and to mould the mouthguard. The most exciting part of the process is to select the colours you want your mouthguard to be; whether they’re your favourite colours, those of your team, or the team you support!

The final part of the process is having the custom mouthguard made. Depending on the custom mouthguard’s purpose, the material it is made out of may vary.

Custom mouthguard v store-bought mouthguard?

Interestingly, the standard mouthguards that can be bought from sports stores and chemists actually offer little-to-no comprehensive protection. Despite being ‘moulded by hot water’ or seeming to fit the shape of your mouth, they simply do not. No two mouths are the same, and no two mouthguards can be either.

An accurately fitting custom mouthguard is created specifically for the unique shape of your mouth, jaw and teeth. The upper section of the custom mouthguard is indented so that the lower teeth can close firmly into it, reducing the amount of shock absorbed by your jaw joints and the risk of injuries to the middle lobes of the brain.

The comfortable, firm fit is not the only part of a custom mouthguard that are important. To offer maximum possible protection, the thickness of the material must also be taken in to account to protect your teeth, gums, joints and jaw.

At Complete Dental in Coorparoo & Elanora, we recommend that all mouthguards intended for use in sports are worn-in before a game, so you are used to the new snug sensation and do not see it as a distraction.
