Interestingly, crooked teeth are not necessarily genetic. The answer is more complicated than you imagine, and it could largely be due to diet. Researchers who have studied tribes who have always eaten a traditional diet discovered their teeth were most likely to be evenly aligned and free from cavities. In contrast, as the Western diet has become more heavily processed, there has been a corresponding increase in the number of people with crooked and decayed teeth. Often there isn’t enough room for the modern-sized jaw to accommodate a complete set of adult teeth. The effects of eating a Western-style diet can appear in as soon as the next generation.
The reason why a Western diet can make such a difference could be due to fat-soluble vitamins including vitamins A, D, and K. These vitamins are primarily found in animal fats and organ meat, full-fat dairy, seafood and in egg yolks. Many people try to follow lower-fat diets that could be vitamin deficient. Without these vitamins the jaws cannot grow properly, resulting in crooked teeth and an increased risk of obstructive sleep apnoea that often due to poorly developed jaws.
In contrast, traditional diets can contain between 10 and 20 times the quantity of fat-soluble vitamins compared to Western diets. Eating properly provides the body with the right materials to grow and develop correctly, and today many of us are deficient in essential vitamins.
